Is the new Gucci Mane taking a wrong turn? By: Parufka

The Godfather of Atlanta rap has had quite an interesting life, especially in the past couple of years. His fame has blown up exponentially after being released in May 2016 from his most recent 2-year jail sentence. From marrying his loyal sweetheart to publishing his own book, Gucci seemed to have the best 2017 out of anyone. But while most of the rap community has love for Wop, some worry that he may be starting to go in the wrong direction.

In an interview he gave with Malcolm Gladwell (one of my favorite authors), Guwop explained that his recent success stems from consistently putting out music even while in jail, as well as adapting his music style to collaborate with new and upcoming artists. This has definitely worked in his favor and I appreciate all the features he includes on his new projects including Drake, Yung Thug and Kanye West. But recently he was featured on a remix of It’s Everyday Bro by the American fuckboy, Jake Paul. Jake has been trying to infectiously spread his name into hip hop and he started by trying to collaborate with Gucci and later trying to create merch with 21 Savage. According to an article on Hot New Hip Hop[1], Gucci wanted at least $250k for just the feature. While that feature was probably the quickest way to make $250k, I don’t think it was worth tarnishing Gucci’s name. I can respect the hustle but no amount of money could get me to work with either of the Paul brothers. On top of that, Wop now says that he wants to add Lil Pump to his 1017 Brick Squad roster. Maybe Gucci sees a little bit of his old self in Pump because before the jail time, he was also a heavily drug addicted rapper. Lil Pump is pretty mediocre as far as hip hop goes but at least he has some potential and has made a prominent name for himself already. Jake Paul on the other hand, shouldn’t even be considering hip hop and I was honestly disappointed to see that Guwop even thought about working with him. Let’s hope in 2018, Gucci will continue to make bangers, but leave all the trash from 2017.
