Top 10 Hip-Hop Albums of 2017 By: DimVinci
Intro
These are the top 10 albums of the year in my opinion. These albums left a great impression on me and I find myself listening to them often.
10. Rags - EARTHGANG APPLE MUSIC SPOTIFY
9. You Only Live 2wice - Freddie Gibbs APPLE MUSIC SPOTIFY
Freddie Gibbs is 100% back on his bullshit on this project. Gangsta gibbs kills almost every beat on this tape. "Alexys" is a highlight off this tape, KAYTRANADA provides a great vintage type vibe beat. "20 Karat Jesus" is also another hard joint, the back half of the beat is something Chance would rap on. "Amnesia" also is one of the hardest joint of the year. If you are a fan of gangster rap I would check out this album. Another great ass cover art.
8. All AmeriKKKan BADA$$ - Joey Bada$$ APPLE MUSIC SPOTIFY
Joey Bada$$ made a great album, hands down. Joey is one of the most promising young artists in the game. I have been a fan of him since his mixtape days. His production choices are very good on this album. Ranging from "ROCKABYE BABY" to "DEVASTATED", this album has some great sonic work. Joey also is on his political shit all album. He brings up important things across the whole album. I personally can't wait to see what 2018 has in store for PE and Joey.
7. No Mountains in Manhanttan - Wiki APPLE MUSIC SPOTIFY
I LOVED this album. I have been a huge fan of Wiki since his RATKING days. Wiki's nasally flow is fantastic all over this album. I love the current underground scene in NYC right now; Wiki seems to be at the forefront of it. This cover art is the best of the year I think as well. The painting is so raw and has so many different things incorporated in it. "NMIN" might be one of my favorite songs on the album. The beat is vibey and atmospheric. "Litt 15" is also another great track. Sporting Life gives Wiki and Your Old Droog a great and simple beat. The sample that goes throughout the whole song contains almost zero drums, yet Wiki and YOD still kill the song. Wiki also collaborates with Ghostface Killah, Earl, and KAYTRANADA on his studio debut. This album makes me want to walk into a local bodega and buy a lunch meat sandwich. One of the best performances of the year.
6. Saturation Trilogy - Brockhampton APPLE MUSIC SPOTIFY
Brockhampton is one of the dopest groups out. These dudes really came out and dropped three solid projects in the span of 6 months. The production is very hit or miss with me, but when it hits, its great. Bars are always present across all three albums. My favorite member might be Matt Champion or Ameer Vann. Matt Champion's performance on Saturation III is great. Kevin Abstract also brings heat to the table. His verses are very hit or miss with me as well. His hooks though, are always on point across the trilogy. It took me awhile to like and start head bobbing to their work. I would recommend this to anybody who is getting bored with current rap.
5. BLUE CHIPS 7000 - ACTION BRONSON APPLE MUSIC SPOTIFY
Man do I love Action Bronson. This dude seriously is out here livin' 24/7. His bars are so creative and outlandish. He presents himself as a larger than life figure on the mic. He is always wining a ton of money on bets, doing back flips, and ridding in whips with mocha colored interiors. Bronson also raps over the most unique beats. This is what makes me love Action's work. The production on this album is top-tier. Alchemist, Daringer, Knxwledge, and Party Supplies bring the perfect sound to this album. If you like sample heavy type songs, I would check this out. Bronson is dancing on the mic.
4. Drive it Like its Stolen - Injury Reserve APPLE MUSIC SPOTIFY
Injury Reserve is my favorite hip-hop group, period. Producer Parker Corey brings very unique sounds to the table. His production across all of Injury Reserve's discography is very impressive. Other members Ritchie with a T and Stepa J. Groggs rap their ass off. Ritchie is great on the hooks. "Boom x3" is one of the best songs on the album. Ritchie also spits a crispy verse about old-heads perception of modern hip-hop. This album brings great and unique sounds to the table. Overall, this album is one of the best projects of 2017.
3. 4:44 - JAY Z APPLE MUSIC
The production on this album is SOOO good. NO I.D. is still a top-tier producer and shows it on 4:44. JAY Z spits a lot of great life advice and gives great in sight on things. This is JAY Z's most introspective albums yet and I recommend this to anybody who is a hip-hop fan.
notable tracks - "Moonlight", "Smile", "Caught Their Eyes", "Family Feud", "Bam", "Marcy Me", and "Legacy"
2. DAMN - Kendrick Lamar APPLE MUSIC SPOTIFY
Kendrick Lamar is the greatest rapper of his time and is one of the greatest rappers ever, that is all.
1. Big Fish Theory - Vince Staples APPLE MUSIC SPOTIFY
The best album of the year right here. If you know me, you probably know I am one of the biggest Vince stans out. I seen him last year with a couple of my friends and the shit was crazy. Vince is one of the best young rappers out, period. He hasn't missed yet and continues to drop great pieces of art. "745", "Yeah Right", "SAMO", and "Big Fish" are stand outs, but the whole album is great. The "Alyssa Interlude" is beautiful. The Amy Winehouse sample is great too, it adds another element to it. Vince dances over some of the most complex and dense beats all year. The biggest reason why I love Vince is the fact that he isn't scared of anything. He will rap on anything. He collabed with the Gorillaz, the dude deserves respect.
Best Album of the year.
